About Photo Retouching

In this article, we address some of the following questions and concerns.

“What happens during photo retouching?”

“How come the proofing photos seem too dark?”

“I am worried that I’ll looked tired from all the sleepless nights being a new parent.”

“What are unretouched session photos?”

Taking a digital photo with a camera, whether at our studio or at a client’s home, is just half of the equation to a beautiful custom work of art! Of course proper lighting, professional technique and composition, along with amazing styling and appropriate use of props are all essential to a great photograph. Digital retouching, which happens during post processing (because it happens after a photo is captured by the digital camera), can mean the difference between a good photograph and a great photograph.

At LoveBug Photos, all of our “final” images are professionally retouched to ensure client satisfaction. All of our collections include a number of professionally retouched images. Some of our clients also choose to purchase “unretouched session photos” as an add-on. This set of photos, as the name suggests, are not retouched (in practice, they are usually “lightly retouched” to remove distracting elements and to adjust exposure and colours). The set of unretouched session photos form our clients’ “proofing gallery”.

What happens during photo retouching?

  • Colour/tone correction/adjustments
  • Lighting adjustments/enhancements
  • Skin tone/texture enhancements (e.g., removing blemishes, smoothing skin, etc.)
  • Beauty and aesthetics enhancements (e.g., minimizing eye bags, reducing wrinkles, shaping/slimming of body parts, etc.)
  • Backdrop and props adjustments/enhancements (e.g., smoothing creases, filling empty space, extending background, removing distracting stains or marks, etc.)

The main purpose of our digital retouching process is to bring out the best in a photo’s subject. For newborn babies, this may include adjusting their skin tone to reduce excess redness/yellowness. It may also include removing skin imperfections which is quite common. For new moms and dads, we offer to do our best to minimize any excess “tired looks” due to sleep deprivation. And we happily oblige to slim faces and bodies upon request.

Another purpose of our digital retouching process is to compensate for space and lighting constraints sometimes encountered at client location photoshoots. So don’t worry if the backdrop has creases or looks too small, or some faces appear too dark in the proofing photos, they’ll all be taken care of during the retouching process!
